Courtney Marie Andrews is legitimately great music. I first listened to this and thought, “Oh, this must be some really, really popular mainstream singer that everyone has already heard of.” Turns out, she only has about 500 likes on Facebook despite her excellent song writing.
“No One’s Slate Is Clean” is one of the most powerful songs I’ve ever heard. Rarely does anybody have a powerful enough voice to make songs like this really work. It’s kind of like a southwestern mix of Bjork and Brandi Carlile but with better lyrics.
“Monkey On A Chain” is equally as powerful, touching on some of the worst problems with our society. That subtle vibrato on her voice persists even when she hums. It’s perfect.
“Songs For Tourists” is a bit slower but just as beautiful. “Mistress Of The Stone” is more personal. “Ballad Of A Home Once Left” sounds exactly like the title suggests. “Sex Dreams” is surprisingly low-key until the end of the song. Maybe that is appropriate after all.
The rest of the album on the BandCamp site flows beautifully and smoothly with “Unbalanced Suns”, “Canals Of Amsterdam”, “Georgia Guilt”, “Dear Sister”, and finally “Magician’s Best Trick”. Each of those songs are worth listening to and remembering by name.
Courtney Marie Andrews is a really great singer, and her songs are all beautifully written and arranged. I definitely wouldn’t compare her to Regina Spektor, although somebody else did. I could see that on “Unbalanced Suns”, but not on anything else. In any case, this is definitely an artist you shouldn’t miss.
