The Young Friends are very poppy. These beats are fast, and it reminds me quite a bit of The Drums. This is new wave pop, and all of these tones are really excellent.
The titles of these songs are great! They’re short and extremely to the point. Examples include, “Bummer”, “I Fell Asleep”, and “Shut The Door”.
I was surprised when the vocals started on the second track on The Young Friends’ album “Hello” called “Let ‘Em Know” because the first track is entirely without vocals. I must say that I think these vocals fit in very well with this band. It’s sort of similar to The Fashion, who I love, but way less whiny and violent. The Young Friends are just very fun and sort of tropical. Maybe a bit like Vampire Weekend, although that reference is way overdone.
The vocals do sound kind of weirdly processed though. I’m not sure if it’s just the fact that I’m listening to this on really awful laptop speakers when I’m used to nice monitors or not though. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt since I really like everything else about this band.
Phoenix has been doing some really wonderful things lately in a lot of different ways, and this band is totally a good example of a band based on making music that sounds good and pulling it off really well. Excellent work, The Young Friends. Keep doing what you’re doing and many, many people will get behind you and love your music.
